Agent of Content

Agent of Content

I’m announcing my job search with a 45-second video called Agent of Content.

While hiring managers are an important audience for me right now, I’m excited to make new connections of all kinds. I’d love to meet other marketers and job seekers out there, and founders who are building out their marketing teams. I’m also having fun reconnecting with friends, past colleagues, and folks I’ve worked with over the years.

I love creating new, original things that bring people together, especially when it’s for a good cause (ahem!). And I’ve always felt original art (and content) is a great way to do that.

Quick note: I’m using ‘agent’ here in the literal sense: someone who “acts on behalf of a principal entity.” So an agent of content is someone who acts on behalf of the content, and the craft behind it. I think of it like a champion or custodian of content marketing. In that sense, anyone who creates or otherwise supports marketing content is an “agent of content” in my eyes. Marketers, makers, creators! We are Agents of Content! 🏁🦸🏻🦸🏾‍♂️🦸🏼‍♀️ Anyway, back to the main thread.

I’m now a free agent (of content)

After an exciting run as the first marketing hire at an early-stage e-commerce tech startup, I’m a free agent.

I joined the Rebuy team back in December 2020 as employee #8, and for the last 5.5 years I helped grow the business through inbound marketing, consistent cross-functional collaboration, and a healthy focus on the (internal and external) customer experience.

I built the early content program essentially from scratch. When I started, I handled everything from social media, press releases, and PR inquiries to newsletters, product marketing, and case studies. As the marketing team grew, I focused on editorial strategy, SEO, and content operations.

Then in June, Rebuy went through a round of layoffs that affected several marketers, myself included. I wrote briefly about my time at Rebuy here. (Spoiler: it was great and I didn’t take it for granted.)

Now, I’m focused on finding a good fit for my content skills, B2B SaaS experience, and methodical production approach.

To announce my availability for full-time and fractional content marketing work, I’m launching Agent of Content.

I edited Agent of Content with the CapCut app. I think Watsen’s got a future in Hollywood.

What is Agent of Content?

Agent of Content is the codename for my job search campaign, and it marks the next chapter of my marketing journey. I’m approaching it like a product launch, with a mix of new content including videos, blog articles, social posts, testimonials, a revamped website, and portfolio updates. I think of it as my first major campaign launch since Rebuy Bundle Builder.

Speaking of reinvention, I did a similar thing back in 2017 with my I Got Skills music video résumé. I considered doing another music video this time, too; a kind of I Got Skills 2.0. I certainly have more skill to rap about now. But this time, I wanted to try something a little different. And besides, I couldn’t top I Got Skills if I tried. It was a product of its time.

Enter Agent of Content. A little more refined. A little more composure. And a lot less rapping (for better or worse). To me, Agent of Content feels like the trailer for a new streaming sitcom series about the job market and working in tech. Netflix, if you’re reading this, call me.

Fun fact: The track underneath the video is “Electric Wave,” something I wrote and produced earlier this year under my artist project, Watsen Miles. (Watsen is my dog’s name, my artist name is Watsen Miles, and I’m Miles – it gets confusing.)

You can also listen to Electric Wave on Apple Music and YouTube.

Full-time or fractional? Yes

I’m actively applying for director, head, and senior manager roles in content, brand, and communications at B2B SaaS companies and early-stage startups.

To bridge the employment gap, I’m open to select fractional content work. If you’ve got a list of content ideas or half-finished projects sitting in your backlog that you’ve been wanting to ship once and for all, I invite you to reach out. Maybe you have a loyal customer with an untold success story you want to share with the world. Or a seasonal campaign about to slip through the cracks. If so, submit this intake form, and I’ll reply right away.

It’s not all about the SaaS, though. I’ve helped nonprofits wth fundraisers and annual campaigns like Giving Tuesday. If your nonprofit needs marketing support this year, send me a note with your project and let’s work together.

Make the next move be the best move

To support the cause, watch Agent of Content and drop a like or comment on social. To really go above and beyond, share it with your network (or privately) in case it’s useful to someone you know (or someone who knows someone you know, you know?).

Please enjoy and share. You might just lead me to an exciting new opportunity.

Thanks for watching, reading, and supporting.
